5.2 Elemental Primer

Rating: 2 votes, 5.00 average.
In lieu of an actual guide update (because there’s still a lot of late tier stuff to work out) here’s a quick & nasty primer that will get you through the first few weeks.

Public Service Announcement
There have been a number of "when will X be available?" questions lately. My answer is "when it's ready". A lot of things require testing, examination and thought before actually publishing, and most of what remains is the hard part (stat weights, gear sets, trinket lists).

Rotation Changes.
Single Target: Nothing. Nada. Zip. Everything is As Per 5.1.
AoE: CL at 6 or fewer targets. Add in Magma Totem & Earthquake above 6 (Magma can be “pre-cast” if you time it right)

Talent Changes.
All of Tier 4 is up in the air. Echo is still good, but with Elemental Mastery having a 90 second cooldown you can use it with every Ascendance, plus an extra use in between. Also, Ancestral Swiftness is useful if you choose Primal Elementalist, as it now comes with 10% melee haste in addition to 5% spell haste (and the elemental pets use Melee haste for their default attack).

Tier 6 is now a toss up between Elemental Blast & Primal Elementalist. The latter is better on movement fights, and can be worth taking if you use AS or EM (with the FE glyph, every 36 second FE gets 20 seconds of 30% haste).

Change log
  • 13 March - Here's an update on what I'm working on at the moment, taking a leaf from Twintop's book. Still need to set up the Stat analysis stuff, which will then lead to gearset revamps & going through this process again.
  • 14 March - Added stat weight graph. Bear in mind that this is with T15 4pc & the Sinister meta gem, so Echo & Mastery will be inflated a bit. I will be generating another set without those bonuses, then using this to generate T15N gearsets for further testing.
  • 18 March - Added N4B (No 4pc + Burning) graphs.

Glyphs
Flame Shock is no longer required. Recommended glyphs are Chain Lighting, Unleashed Lightning and your choice (possibly Fire Elemental)

Gearing
For the moment, Hit > Int >> Haste = Mastery > Crit is a good way to go.

Warning
The above is likely to change as we hit two key points: T15 4pc and the Sinister meta gem. I’m still working on the details, but there may be a mid-tier revamp once you acquire either or both.
If you want to help get the guide updated sooner, help out with the gearset configuration

quick question u say Haste=Mastery but shoulden't the stat weight change if u go either EB or PE with mastery>crit for EB and crit>mastery for PE?

That's a complicated answer, but in short no, it won't behave that way.

I just cannot imagine my rotation without elemental blast, not sure I could ever drop it

I feel exactly the same, but I really want to try out PE/EM. It'll feel weird without EB, I admit.

What I would be interested to know is if EB and PE are similar in damage, but EB favours mastery but PE favours haste / crit. For heavy movement fights would you get more benefit from UF as a mastery shaman rather than PE.

so effectively EB for low movement fights, UF for heavy movement fights.

As per everything else, it is still being investigated. However UF is definitely not worth taking.

    Appreciate the work Binkenstein,

out of interest, when you produce the graph above, was it with 1 set of stat priorities or did you, for example, go for crit on the PE sims and mastery on the EB sims?

That initial pass seems to suggest you may aswell go with PE and get your gear to suit that as its extremely competative with EB on the majority of fights and way ahead on heavy movement

Wondering if any1 knew the optimum secondary stats at around 500 ilvl.

    Currently Sitting at

    5383 Haste
    10346 Mastery
    307 Crit

From my tests (simcraft) this seemed optimal.

However changing t4 between echo and EM didnt change the anything, where as i thought it would make haste worth a lot less.

    Maybe im missing something.

It looks like for the EB/4pc/Sinister meta scenario, mastery is weighted at ~2.7, while int is weighted at ~4.9. Does this mean it would be optimal to put 320 mastery gems in yellow sockets and 80 int/160 mastery in red sockets? Seems a little odd, so just wanted to confirm.

Thanks for all you do Bink!

That is potentially the case, but this set has a low amount of mastery so it could be that.

Nice, seems PE+AS will be my Choice for now, less RNG and got no 4pc or sinister either. Thanks Bink!

Does it make any difference with the fire elemental glyph uptime results (what was it, roughly 25% fight lengths where it was an upgrade, otherwise it was worse off) if Primal Elementalist is chosen? I presume not, but was wondering.

As far as I can see, the choice of whether or not to glyph all comes down to fight length and/or if there's an important burn period at set intervals, but for some reason (as enhancement), Simulationcraft is choosing the fire elemental glyph as baseline for BiS calculations, which seems weird. Any idea if it's just because of the fight length they've randomly chosen?

I know practically nothing about current enhancement best practices, but are they using elemental mastery for the level 60 talent? A 3 minute Fire Elemental cooldown lines up nicely with that.
  15. Bellante's Avatar
Yes, we are, but at least back in 4.x, the Fire elemental only scales with spellpower, never with any secondary stats. Has any of this changed?

Yes, for the umpeenth time this has changed. Elemental Pets no longer take a snapshot of stats, and scale with all applicable stats (haste, crit, hit)

Apologies for having to repeat yourself, was trying to google it like crazy. I'll try to spread the word

    2 question

    1) with AS+PE bild the FE glyph in dps lost right?
    2) How should use the AS on active effect? on cd on a detterminate effect or just let it there cause we pick it for the passive effect?

both will be answered in the guide once I finish updating it.

Is there any chance we can have some trinket info or should we w8 for the updated guide? And if we have to w8 would be much to ask how close you are in releasing it? Thanks in advance.
