Farm vs Progression Focus

Rate this Entry
One of the decisions facing raid groups in Tier 14 is whether to focus on “progression” kills, ie: working on that next boss you have left to kill as much as possible, or clearing all the farm content before looking at progression work.

If we create a formula to look at what it takes to kill a boss, it would go something like this:

Boss Kill = Power + Skill

Obviously this means that the more Skill you have, the lower the Power requirement. You can increase both, Power via getting more gear/buffs, and Skill by improving how you play & learning encounters.

The trick for Raid Leaders is figuring out whether hours spent wiping on bosses in an instance like Terrace of Endless Springs, or clearing out Mogu’shan Vaults & Heart of Fear to get gear upgrades for your raid.

The problem I find with some raid groups is that they focus more on the Skill side of things rather than doing a quick farm clear to boost their Power, then going on to the Skill improvement side of things. The down side to this is that there is less time to spend on the Skill side of things, but spending time learning a boss is only a part of the Skill portion anyway. There are also other ways to improve Skill, by looking at how you can improve your individual raid performance.

There's also a balance between the joy/excitement of killing new bosses vs frustration at wiping continually on them.

I have to agree with your premise: a quick farming run to boost the Power component is the best use of time, at least until the probability of getting gear upgrades falls below, say, 50%. If your odds of *someone* in the raid getting a needed upgrade is still better than a coin toss, I say go for the gear. That way, the Boss Kill probability goes up even if no one gets any more skillful.

I like the premise of this post, but it feels a little short.

I understand it's more a random thought than an 'article' per se, however I think this would make for a very interesting in-depth article and I would thoroughly enjoy reading such if you had the time to extrapolate on your opinion about something like this.

    Thanks as always Bink.

You'll find that on technical stuff I can waffle on with the best of them, but with more abstract subjects I don't always write that much.

Reasons why you shouldn't completely ignore farm:
-If you do progression only and you don't get the kill in 1 lockout you got nothing to show for the week, and next week you'll only come back the same or weaker (turnover).
-Moral, people like the feeling of getting the kills. Happy raiders stay longer.
-Flexibility, we got hosed at one point because we didn't farm, and a gorefiends left us during will progression, but we didn't have a dpser with enough tank gear to tank the boss in place of the DK tank... and you NEED gorefirends for heroic will on 25 man. BADLY.
-People get really bad at fights they haven't seen in a month.
